Jared Philburn Obituary

Jared Scott Philburn passed away November 25, 2022 at his home in Fowlerville, Michigan, after a year long battle with glioblastomamultiforme, an aggressive form of brain cancer. He passed away on hospice services with Amara Hospice, surrounded by his family and close friends. Jared was born to James and Linda Philburn on August 31, 1975 in Lansing Michigan. Jared was a natural athlete and grew up playing baseball, football, and wrestling. He excelled at wrestling and was the first ever USAW Greco, all-American wrestler from Fowlerville and captain of the 1994 State championship team. He was the 160 pound individual State champion in 1994 and was the first high school wrestler in charge of the peewee wrestling program at Fowlerville. Jared’s record was 50 wins, no losses, with 30 pins his senior year.  After high school Jared earned a full ride scholarship for Wrestling and attended college where he studied Recreation Education at Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho, where he continued his wrestling career for 3 years before becoming injured. During that time, he married his childhood friend Amy, in 1998.  After college, Jared and Amy returned to Fowlerville and a few years later welcomed their first child Ashton to the family in October 2000. McKinley was born 15 months later followed by Elly 15 months after that. Jared always said no kids after he turned 30 years old so the pressure was on.  This past August, Jared was blessed to be a part of Ashton’s wedding proposal to his girlfriend, Sarah Steen, whom he loved like his own daughter. His family meant more to him than anything else in the world and he was unendingly proud of each one of his children. He celebrated each of their accomplishments as if it was his own. While the kids were growing up, Jared continued to assist in coaching wrestling. He was an entrepreneur at heart and had many business ventures throughout the years. Jared always had big ideas and was good at turning his hobbies into a business, from opening a dune buggy track and rental to creating Halfcocked Targets, a steel shooting target company.  Through the years Jared enjoyed coaching wrestling, fishing, boating, target shooting, attending his kids, nieces, and nephews sporting events and was the most supportive dad and uncle in the stands. He was the first one to volunteer when anyone was in need of assistance of any kind. He had the most sensitive, loving, outgoing, fun, helpful and kindhearted soul under that “tough guy exterior”.  Jared will be cremated and his remains will be taken to his favorite destinations at a later date with his family as he requested. Jared is survived by many family members and friends that love him very much. He will be greatly missed.  The family would like to thank the University of Michigan Oncology team and Amara Hospice for their great care. They would also like to thank the many wonderful friends and family that helped so generously over this past year. In lieu of flowers, the family requests any donations be made to the Fowlerville Wrestling Program, 7677 W Sharpe Rd, Fowlerville, MI 48836. Checks can be made out to Fowlerville Community Schools with “Jared’s Wrestling Memorial” printed in the memo.
