Dennis Kallek Obituary

Dennis Kallek of East Lansing, MI passed away February 7, 2024, at his home at the age of 83. He was the only child of Edmund and Elsie (nee Dean) Kallek and grew up in Fowlerville, Michigan. His mother had a restaurant, Elsie’s, where Dennis sometimes helped out as a teen. He graduated from Fowlerville schools and then attended Michigan State University, where he played drums in the marching band as an undergraduate student. He remembered this time fondly, and in later years often took walks on campus and went to watch the marching band practice. Dennis earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in art, both at MSU. He went to work for Jacobson’s, where he spent his entire career. He was the display director at the East Lansing store and supervised staff who did the windows and interior displays throughout the store. Dennis was hands-on and directly involved, using his creative skills as an artist, while also understanding the business aspects of the specialty store that Jacobson’s was. He was committed to supporting other artists and acted as coordinator of the East Lansing Art Festival for many years. He spent the last years of his career at Jacobson’s central office as a buyer of display products for multiple stores. After retirement he did some part-time display work for About the Home in Grand Ledge, and over several years, did Christmas tables at the Grand Ledge Opera House. Dennis was interested in interior design history and antiques, and was knowledgeable about every period in design history. He furnished his home with collected art and objects, in addition to his own creations. A friend once referred to his home as “endlessly fascinating.” Dennis especially loved decorating his home every Christmas, and hosting friends during the holidays. In retirement Dennis also enjoyed gardening during spring and summer, filling his patio and border area with a plethora of unique plants and flowers, adding to it every year. As an artist, he spent his indoor time during winter on art projects, in particular his prolific production of abstract collages, imaginative, skillful and an ongoing source of delight for him. Feral cats around his neighborhood soon learned that Dennis loved cats and that there would always be food and water for them on his patio. He had names for each of the many cats who came around, and eventually one special orange tabby he named Marmalade, came inside and made his home with Dennis as his beloved house pet for many years. Dennis was predeceased by his parents and Marmalade. No formal services are planned at this time. Dennis will be laid to rest with his parents at Greenwood Cemetery in Fowlerville. A friend of many years said, “Den was a self-made man, and he had a good life." He will be deeply missed by his friends, who appreciated his unique sense of humor, his many creative talents and longtime friendship.
