John E. Matthews
November 6, 1931-December 25, 2019
John Eugene Matthews, known by his friends, family and business associates as “Farmer Jack”, passed away on December 25th, at the age of 88. Jack was a Petoskey High School graduate, served in the Army as an aircraft inspector, and attended Michigan State University where he earned his degree in Agricultural Economics. Jack’s family farm was located at the property overlooking Bay Harbor. He and his son, Steve, converted the family farm into a golf course and residential development, known as Crooked Tree. Jack and Steve ultimately partnered with Boyne in the golf course where they remain partners today. Outside of his interests in Northern Michigan, Jack enjoyed a successful 50 year career in insurance, owned and operated a saddle and tack business, and, in his later years, served as President of the Bent Tube Corporation in Fowlerville, Michigan. Jack will be forever missed by his wife, Cheryl; sons and their spouses; Mark and Amy Matthews of Grand Haven, Steve and Julie Matthews of Petoskey, James Matthews of East Jordan; one sister, Ruth Hoffman of Petoskey; 10 grandchildren, Taylor and Karl Schulz, John (Jack) Matthews, Scott, Lucas, Eva, Chase and Kim Matthews, Chelsea and Cameron Collar. Services and the celebration of Jack’s life will be held privately by the immediate family. The family extends their thanks to all of Jack’s friends and business associates for their understanding and the kind outpouring of support and sympathy. Any remembrances of Jack should be directed to the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
